In 1957 Ben Hogan wrote "BEN HOGAN'S FIVE LESSONS – The Modern Fundamentals of Golf." To date, this book is in its 64th printing and has sold over 10 million copies. It is widely recognized as one of the greatest instructional books ever written on the game of golf. In the Five Lessons, Mr. Hogan stated "good golf begins with a good grip." As a matter of fact, the whole first chapter is dedicated to the golf grip. In Chapter 1, Mr. Hogan states " ... for myself and other serious golfers there is an undeniable beauty in the way a fine player sets his hands on the club." Clearly, Mr. Hogan believed a fundamental grip was one of the most important aspects in the game of golf.
Perhaps it was this recognition of the importance of the golf grip that inspired Mr. Hogan to set with his hands on a golf club demonstrating the perfect golf grip for hours while a mold of the grip was developed. In the early 1980's, George Coleman asked Mr. Hogan to make a mold of his hands so a bronze replica could be made to immortalize what has become known as the perfect golf grip. Due to some imperfections in the first effort, Mr. Hogan requested his friend and dentist in Ft. Worth – Dr. William Cowan – try again and the world famous bronzes were born. To go along with the bronze hands, a bronze base was designed to have an area where a plaque with Mr. Hogan's signature could go and also so that the bronze of his hands could be easily removed. To date, only three bronzes exist in the world – one is in the USGA museum in Far Hills, NJ, one is on display at Colonial Country Club, and one is in a private collection.
Thanks to the Hogan heirs, the Ben Hogan Foundation has been given the right to reproduce a limited number of these bronzes and will entitle this piece of art the "Hands of the Hawk". To further the charitable purposes of the Ben Hogan Foundation, we are seeking endowment level donors who will partner with the Ben Hogan Foundation. As a token of our appreciation for the special donors who make tax-deductable1 endowment gifts of at least $25,000, the Ben Hogan Foundation is presenting these donors with the "Hands of the Hawk" – a very special and rare piece of art. To ensure a quality Mr. Hogan would be proud of, we have commissioned world renowned bronze artist Karl Ferris to lead this process for us. For Hogan fans who possess the resources, this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a part of history.
